Bearkat Football Players Earns SLC’s “Player of the Week”

Sam Houston State swept the weekly Southland Conference football player of the week honors after its 51-43 win over Stephen F. Austin in the 87th “Battle of the Piney Woods” at Reliant Stadium in Houston Saturday.
Junior quarterback Brian Bell was the offensive player of the week, junior cornerback Bookie Sneed won defensive honors and senior punter Matt Foster was the special teams player of the week.
Bell picked up 22nd career victory as starting quarterback for Sam Houston.
He directed the offense to 566 total yards in a 51-43 win over rival Stephen F. Austin.
The junior from China Spring, Texas (China Spring H.S.), completed 12 of 20 passes for 168 yards and totaled 69 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. He passed for scores of 5, 31 and 30 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards and accounted for 237 yards total offense.
Sneed returned an interception 92 yards for touchdown that put Sam Houston State in the lead, 20-14, with 5:55 remaining in 2nd quarter. The return by the junior from Conroe, Texas (Conroe H.S.), was a school record, topping the previous mark of 90 yards set by Paul Wenzel against Sul Ross in 1968. He added 11 tackles against SFA.
Foster helped Sam Houston win the field position battle with a 45.1 average, including long of 61 yards. The senior from Melbourne, Australia, landed three punts inside the 20 that includes a high 43-yard punt with 3:10 left to play in the fourth quarter.
That put SFA on its own 15-yard line, forcing them to drive 85 yards in order to score a touchdown and go for a two-point conversion.
Sam Houston travels to Thibodaux, La., to take on the Nicholls State Colonels this Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Bearkats return to Huntsville in two weeks for their Homecoming battle with the McNeese State Cowboys. The game will be played at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Bowers Stadium.
SHSU To Host Intercollegiate Golf Tournament

Twelve women’s teams and nine men’s squads will gather Monday morning at Raven Nest Golf Course as Sam Houston State plays host to the annual Harold Funston Intercollegiate Golf Classic.
The even marks the third year in a row that SHSU has hosted a fall golf event at Raven Nest.
Sam Houston won the men’s tournament both in 2010 and 2011 and the Bearkat women are the defending champs in their competition as well.
A&M-Corpus Christi, Alabama State, Houston Baptist, Lamar, New Orleans, Saint Edwards Texas Southern University, Texas-Pan American, Tyler Junior College, Western Texas College and Jacksonville College will be the participants in the women’s event.
The women’s layout at Raven’s Nest will play at par 71 with a yardage of 6,067 yards.
Jacksonville, North Dakota State, Texas-Brownsville, Texas-Pan American Texas Southern and Tyler will compete in the men’s team competition while four-man squads from Baylor and Houston will play as individual medalist entries only.
The men’s layout also has a par 71 and will be 6,943 yards long.
Play begins Monday with an 8 a.m. shot gun start.
The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.
Bearkats Edges Lumberjacks 51-43 In Piney Woods Battle

Houston, Texas – Brian Bell passed for 168 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two other scores to lead Sam Houston State to a 51-43 Southland Conference victory over Stephen F. Austin Saturday before a record crowd of 26,185 at Reliant Stadium.
Bell’s second touchdown, a nine-yard run, gave Sam Houston a 51-28 lead with 13:05 to play in the fourth.
Stephen F. Austin, led by wide receiver Cordell Roberson who caught 14 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns, battled back. Roberson scored on passes of three and eight yards after back-to-back 51 yards.
When the Bearkats could not pick up a first down, the Jacks drove down to the Bearkat 30 yard line where, on fourth down and 10, Brady Attaway’s pass sailed just over Roberson’s hands to end the game.
Attaway completed 39 of 76 paases for 545 yards and six touchdowns.
Sam Houston State rolled up 566 yards total offense while SFA totaled 396.
All-America running back Tim Flanders gained 125 yards on 27 carries including a long of 44 yards. Bell rushed for 69 yards.
Trey Diller led the Bearkats with 97 yards receiving.
Sam Houston trailed 14-3 in the first quarter but fought back to take a 23-14 halftime lead. The big play in the first half was a 92-yard interception return by Bookie Sneed. The return set a school record, breaking the record of 90 yards by Paul Wenzel set in 1968 against Sul Ross.
Sneed, Darnell Taylor and Kenneth Jenkins led the Kat defense, each with 10 tackles. Taylor also intercepted an Attaway pass.
Sam Houston upped its record to 3-2 for the year while SFA dropped to 2-3. Both teams are 1-1 in Southland Conference action.
Bearkats-Lions Played To A Scoreless Tie

Hammond, La. – Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana battled to a scoreless tie in women’s soccer action Friday afternoon.
The result helped the Bearkats to remain unbeaten in Southland Conference play with a 2-0-1 record. SHSU is 5-7-1 for the year. The shutout was the fifth for the Bearkat defense.
Goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton, the Kats’ back line of Amanda Biega, Lindsey Posner, Ashley Fluty and Kayla Anderson and midfielder Shelby McDaniel each played all 110 minutes of the double overtime contest.
Sam Houston totaled 12 shots while Southeastern Louisiana took 10. Strong play by the defense helped shut down the Lions’ offense as Hambleton had to make only two saves in goal. Her counterpart, Lacey Bockhaus, was forced to make eight saves including one of a shot by Tricia Mallory with less than two minutes left in the first overtime.
“We played well,” Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown said. “We just couldn’t stick it in.”
Mallory led the Bearkats with four shots.
Sam Houston now travels to Tulsa to take on Oral Roberts Sunday afternoon.
