No.3 Kats Clinched Second Straight SLC Title

Natchitoches, Louisiana-Timothy Flanders, Brian Bell and Trey Diller combined to lead the offense and the Bearkat defense remained tough as well as Sam Houston State rolled to a 52-17 victory over Northwestern State Saturday.
The win gives Sam Houston State their second consecutive Southland Conference regular season football championship, a feat unequaled in the Bearkats’ 26 seasons in the league.
Sam Houston and Central Arkansas stand as co-champions, both with 6-1 league records.
The No. 3 ranked Bearkats upped their season record to 8-2.
Flanders produced the 22nd 100-yard rushing performance of his career, carrying 17 times for 138 yards including scoring runs of 56 and 4 yards.
Bell completed 17 of 23 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns.
Diller caught seven of those passes for 119 yards and a score.
The Kat defense allowed Northwestern State only 141 total yards and 42 on the ground.
The Sam Houston offense rolled up 509 total yards (253 rushing and 256 passing).
The championship marks Sam Houston’s fifth Southland football title.
The Bearkats also won championships in 1991, 2001, 2004 and 2011.
After being forced to punt on their first two possessions, the Bearkats got rolling on a seven play 93-yard drive with Flanders scoring on a 56-run through the right side at the 3:07 mark in the first quarter.
The run marked the ninth time in his career Flanders has scored a touchdown of more than 50 yards.
Ed Eagan returned the kickoff 82 yards to tie the game 7-7 ten seconds later.
Miguel Antonio gave the Bearkats a 10-7 lead with just 21 seconds into the second quarter after a 10-play 55-yard drive.
Sam Houston reached the five-yard line on the drive but was moved back to the 20-yard line by a personal foul penalty.
A quarterback sack by Robert Shaw forced Northwestern State to punt from its end zone against the wind on the next Demon possession.
On the first play after the punt, Bell found tight end T. J. Jones open over the middle for a 50-yard touchdown as SHSU went up 17-7 with 12:08 to play in the half.
The Bearkat defense came up with the next score.
J. T. Cleveland forced a fumble that pinned the Demons on their own one.
On third down, Bookie Sneed intercepted a Brad Henderson pass and returned the pick 11 yards for a touchdown and a 24-7 lead 7:54 before intermission.
The interception was Sneed’s fourth of the year and his second for a touchdown.
The junior cornerback now has eight career interceptions, tying him for eighth in the all-time SHSU interception standings.
Bell threw 38-yards to Trey Dillar and 10-yards to Chance Nelson for a pair of touchdowns in the final 2:57 of the first half.
The pass to Diller completed a seven play 68-yard drive and Nelson’s catch ended a 10 play 61-yard march.
John Shaughnessy kicked a 27-yard field goal on the last play to make the score at intermission 38-10.
Sam Houston opened the second half with a 14-play 80-yard scoring drive capped off by a four-yard touchdown run by Flanders.
The Bearkats finish their regular season schedule next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in College Station against Texas A&M.
No.5 Bearkats Ate Up Cardinals 56-7

Beaumont – Walter Payton Award candidate Timothy Flanders rushed 16 times for 131 yards and four touchdowns to lead Sam Houston to a 56-7 Southland Conference football victory over Lamar Saturday.
The junior’s touchdown runs of seven, one, 59 and 10 yards upped his career totals to 47 rushing TDs and 50 total six-pointers.
Both marks rank Flanders third in Southland Conference annals.
The victory, Sam Houston’s fifth consecutive win, upped the No. 5-ranked Bearkats to 6-2 for the year and 4-1 in Southland Conference action.
Lamar dropped to 3-6 for the year and 0-4 in league play.
The Bearkats out-gained the Cardinals 508 total yards to 181.
Sam Houston’s 378 yards rushing ranks as the program’s third highest total in a Southland Conference game.
The 100-plus yard performance marked Flanders 20th career 100-yard game.
He now ranks sixth in Southland all-time rushing with 3,379 career yards.
The four TDs give Flanders his fourth career game with three or more scores.
Flanders set the Sam Houston school record for touchdowns in a game with five in an overtime victory over New Mexico last year during the Bearkats’ 14-0 run to the NCAA Division I national championship game.
Kat kicker Miguel Antonio joined in the record-setting spree with eight extra points to become Sam Houston’s all-time kick-scoring leader with 264 points.
He passed Billy Hayes who produced 258 points as a kicker from 1985-88.
Flanders is the only Bearkat to score more points with 300 in his career.
Flanders opened the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown to complete a nine-play, 45 yard set up when the Bearkat defense stopped Lamar for a loss of one on a fourth-and-two attempt at the Cardinal 46.
On the next series, Darnell Taylor knocked the ball out the Cardinal running back hands at the 15-yard line and J. T. Cleveland ran the fumble recovery to the one.
Flanders took one play to score and up SHSU up 14-0.
Another fumble recovery set up the Kats’ third tally.
Jeremy Jackson forced the miscue and Kenneth Jenkins recovered at the Lamar 48.
On the first play after the turnover, Bell founder Diller alone in the Lamar secondary for a 48-yard score with 1:16 left before intermission.
SHSU took only a minute and six seconds to tally its first touchdown of the second period.
On the third play of an 80-yard drive, Flanders broke for a 59-yard score, the junior’s longest run this season and the third longest of his career.
The touchdown marked Flanders seventh run of more than 50 yards during his career.
With 9:56 left in the third, Flanders picked up his fourth touchdown running from the Wild Bearkat formation from 10 yards out.
Keyshawn Hill added a six-yard touchdown after a nine-play, 67-yard drive to put SHSU up 42-0 with 4:38 to play in the third.
Kevin Johnson put Lamar on the scoreboard with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 4:36 remaining in the period.
Cody Morgan tallied the final touchdown for Sam Houston on a three-yard run to complete an 80-yard fourth quarter drive.
Sam Houston returns home to play host to Southeastern Louisiana next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the final Bearkat game at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium this season.
UCA Upsets No.3 SHSU 24-20

Conway, Ark. – Quarterback Wyrick Smothers directed Central Arkansas on touchdown drives of 72 and 75 yards in the final five minutes as the Bears upset No. 3 ranked Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon at Estes Stadium.
SHSU had taken a 20-10 lead with 5:24 to play with drives for a touchdown and field goals after UCA tied the contest 10-10 late in the third quarter.
Smothers found Dominique Croom in the left corner of the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown for the winning score with 57 seconds remaining.
In the final minute, the Bearkats drove to the UCA 24 before the Bears intercepted a pass in the end zone on the contest’s final play.
Sam Houston dropped to 1-2 for the season while Central Arkansas upped its record to 3-1. The contest was the Southland Conference opener for both squads.
Following a loss to Baylor last week, the result marks the first time SHSU has lost two consecutive games since 2010. The Kats went 14-1 in 2011, reaching the NCAA Division I national championship game.
Smothers completed 24 of 41 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns. UCA rolled up 413 yards total offense while Sam Houston totaled 470.
The end of the contest erased another strong performance by Timothy Flanders and Richard Sincere. Flanders rushed 22 times for 125 yards including TD runs of 39 and 11 yards. Sincere rushed for 53 yards including two big runs to set up scores for the Bearkets.
The 100-yard performance by Flanders is the 17th 100-yard game of his career. The two scores move him up to No. 5 in Southland Conference career rushing touchdowns with 39.
Sam Houston scored on its opening drive of the game after a UCA punt. Miguel Antonio put the Kats up 3-0 with 8:21 to play in the first quarter after an 11-play 48-yard drive.
After an exchange of punts, SHSU took two plays to score its first touchdown. Brandon Willkerson rushed 33 yards to the UCA 39 on a reserve. Then Flanders took a pitch from Richard Sincere down the left sideline for a 39-yard score. SHSU led 10-0 with 1:41 to play in the opening quarter.
Sam Houston had another scoring opportunity early in the second quarter after an interception by J. T. Cleveland. But Antonio missed a 24-yard field goal attempt.
Wynrick Smothers put UCA on the board with a 30-yard scoring pass to Terence Bobo, cutting the lead to 10-7 with 10:05 to play in the half.
UCA had three chances to score its second TD late in the third quarter, but the Bearkat defense held and forced the Bears to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Eddie Camara with 2:03 remaining in the third to tie the game 10-10.
Sam Houston answered with an 11-play 80-yard drive to go back in front 17-10. Bell hit Chance Nelson for a 20-yard gain to the UCA 29 and Richard Sincere dashed 19 yards around left end to set up the score. Flanders picked up his second TD of the day with an 11-yard run.
The defense forced a punt and the Kat offense took 5:24 off the clock and added three more points with a 12-play 66-yard drive that ended with Antonio’s 26-yard field goal.
UCA bounced back with an eight-play 75-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard run up the middle by Smothers to cut the margin back to a field goal, 20-17, with 3:18 to go.
