Thomas And Martin Earns “Rare” Three Peat

Sam Houston’s Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas has become the first three-time Academic All-Southland Conference women’s basketball selections in the Bearkats’ 26 years in the league.
Martin and Thomas, who led the Kat women to the their first Southland Conference championship and a WNIT post-season appearance in 2013, are first team selections on the academic all-league honor squad announced Wednesday.
Martin is a graduate student with a 3.62 grade point average in education.
The Conroe product is a three-time first team All-Southland performer and was the team’s leading scorer this year with a 15.9 average.
Martin ended her career as the university’s all-time leader in free throw percentage (.797) and three point field goals (311) and stands No. 2 all-time in Kat scoring (1,834) and assists (122).
She is both a Dean’s List and President’s List student who earned her Bachelor’s degree and is completing work on her Master’s.
Thomas is a mass communication major with a 3.14 GPA.
The senior from Allentown, Penn., was named the conference’s defender of the year.
She earned first team All-Southland and all-tournament honors at the league’s post-season event in Katy.
A member of the All-Southland defensive team, Thomas ranked No. 1 in the league and No. 6 in NCAA Division I women’s basketball in rebounding.
She is the only Sam Houston player to total both more than 1,000 points and rebounds.
The Academic All-Southland team is selected annually by a vote of the league’s head coaches, sports information contacts and academic advisors.
Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Bearkat WBB Earns SLC Honors

Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas both are first team All-Southland selections.
Thomas is the 2013 Southland Conference “Defensive Player of the Year” and Bearkat head coach Brenda Nichols has been honored as the league’s women’s basketball “Coach of the Year.”
Thomas also was named to the first ever Southland All-Defensive team and the Bearkats’ Chanice Smith was an honorable mention All-Southland selection.
The 2013 All-Southland Conference women’s basketball team was announced Monday morning.
The honor squad is selected by vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Thomas led Sam Houston State to its first-ever Southland regular-season title.
The senior from Allentown, Pa. (Parkview H.S.), led the league in rebounding with 12.5 rebounds per conference game, including 9.4 defensive rebounds per league game.
She registered 1.3 blocks per contest and recorded a league-best 19 double-doubles.
Thomas finished the regular season with 371 rebounds including a conference-best 20-rebound performance in a win against Oral Roberts in January.
Thomas is the first Sam Houston player to earn defender of the year honors.
Thomas stands as Sam Houston’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,129) and blocks (159) and stands No. 4 in Bearkat career scoring (1,381).
She is the only SHSU women’s basketball player to total both 1,000 career points and rebounds.
Smith is the Bearkats’ third leading scorer with 9.5 points per game.
The senior from Mansfield totaled 17 double-figure scoring performances during the 2013 championship season.
She stands as Sam Houston’s 13th all-time leading scorer with 1,081 career points.
Only 14 women’s basketball players in the program’s history have scored more than 1,000 points.
Martin led the Bearkats’ 2013 Southland co-championship team in scoring (16.2 points) and assists (4.2).
The senior from Conroe is a three-time All-Southland first team selection.
She ranks as the program’s all-time leader in both three point field goals (306) and free throw percentage (.795) and stands second in career points (1,797) and assists (442).
Martin, an All-Academic honors candidate as well with a 3.68 grade point average as a Masters’ program student in kinesiology, has scored in double figures in 97 of her 119 games at Sam Houston.
That includes a streak of 47 consecutive double figure games during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Nichols earned her first coach of the year award after guiding the Bearkats to their first overall South Conference regular-season championship.
She is the second Sam Houston State coach to earn the award, joining Vic Schaefer, who was honored in 1996.
The Bearkats enter this week’s conference tournament with a 17-13 overall record and finished 13-5 during conference play.
The Bearkats head into the tournament as the No. 2 seed and winners of four of their last five contests.
Nichols, who led the Bearkats to division titles in 2011 and 2012 before the conference did away with divisional play this season, is looking to guide Sam Houston to its second consecutive postseason trip after advancing to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational last year.
Nichols, who is in her seventh season in Huntsville, has a 78-128 record at Sam Houston, including a 52-39 mark the last three seasons.
The Southland Conference Basketball Tournament begins Wednesday at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
The first four games of the tournament will be streamed live for free on the Southland Conference Digital Network, including Southland.org and the league’s iPhone and Android apps.
The semifinals and championship game of the women’s tournament will be available solely on ESPN3.
Tickets for the tournament are available through Ticketmaster or at the Merrell Center box office.
Sequeena Thomas Earns “SLC” Player of The Week

Sam Houston State senior forward Sequeena Thomas has been named Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Thomas helped the Bearkats moved into a three-way tie for first place with a 5-1 conference mark after two wins one the week against Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts.
In the two games, the senior from Allentown, Pa. (Parkland H.S.), averaged 17.0 rebounds and 13.0 points.
She became Sam Houston’s all-time rebounding leader (990) during the week and set another school record with her 44th career double-double when she pulled down 20 rebounds and scored 18 points against Oral Roberts.
Her 20 boards against the Golden Eagles was only the 12th time a Bearkat woman has accounted for 20 or more rebounds in a game.
Thomas’ three blocks on the week also upped her school record to 190.
Next action for the Sam Houston State women will be a Southland Conference road trip Thursday and Saturday to Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State.
Bearkats Cruised To An 92-45 Win In Exhibition Game

Led by Sequeena Thomas with 15 points and 10 rebounds, the Sam Houston women’s basketball team rolled to a 92-45 exhibition victory over Southwestern University of Georgetown Sunday afternoon.
Thomas was one of four Bearkats in double figures. Chanice Smith added 14 points, Jazmin Wiley 13 and Britni Martin 12.
The Kats never trailed in contest.
Ahead by one, 5-4 at the 18:23 mark, SHSU went on a 12-2 run to go up 17-6 and never led by less than double digits the rest of the way.
Sam Houston led 42-24 at intermission and out-scored the Pirates 50-21 in the second half.
The Bearkats shot an impressive 53.5 percent from the field, hitting 38-of-71 from the floor.
Led by Smith with four treys, the Kats were 7-of-20 from three point range.
Audrey Garcia led Southwestern with 17 points. The Kat defense limited the Pirates to 32.1 percent shooting (18-of-56).
Sam Houston also had the advantage on the boards with 41 rebounds to the visitor’s 36.
Martin assisted on seven Bearkat baskets, blocked two shots and had four steals.
Kaysean Clavelle also was credited with four steals as the defense created 32 Southwestern turnovers.
Sam Houston opens 2012-13 regular season action Friday with their opening round game in the preseason Women’s Basketball Invitational (WNIT) at Delaware.
Bearkats Receives Invite To Pre-Season WNIT

After making their first national post-season tournament appearance, the Sam Houston State Bearkat women’s basketball team will start the 2012-13 season with an invite to the Pre-Season Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
The Bearkats will face the University of Delaware Blue Hens in the opening round of the tournament in Newark, Delaware.
The winner of the match will advance to the second round of the tournament
The Blue Hens were the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Conference Champions last season and are looking to start their title defense in style.
“From what I know, they are a very good team coming off last year,” Bearkat women’s basketball head coach Brenda Nichols said to a representative of the SHSU’s athletic department media relations.
“We are excited for this opportunity and look forward to being able to play some intense and exciting competitors.”
The Blue Hens will be led by senior forward/guard Elena Delle Donne.
Delle Donne is an All-American who averaged 26.1 points per game, made 91.9% of her free throws and shot 38.8% from the three-point line last season.
She received honors from the Associated Press, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), United States Writers Association, the Naismith Award and John Wooden Award.
She was named “Player of the Year” by the CAA and was a finalist for “Player of the Year” by the WBCA, Naismith and Wooden Awards.
“You can’t really measure yourself as a player without going up against the best,” Nichols said. “There is no doubt she is one of the best and will be a true challenge for our team.”
The Bearkats are looking forward to that challenge as they are returning 12 letterman from last year’s team who were the West Division Champions of the Southland Conference and made their first national post-season appearance in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI).
They made it to the semi-final round of the tournament, where they were knocked off by the University of Northern Iowa.
Leading the charge for the Bearkats are seniors Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas.
Martin was ranked 10th in the nation for three-pointers (2.93 per game) and scored 523 total points for the season.
She was runner-up for the Southland Conference’s “Player of the Year” that went to Central Arkansas’ Megan Herbert.
Thomas led the Southland Conference in rebounds (12.6 per game).
She averaged 14.8 points per game and had an average of 2.0 blocks which ranked her #9 and #2 in the conference, respectively.
The tournament consists of 16 teams from around the country and will be held from November 9 to November 16-17.
The Bearkats-Blue Hen match will begin at 7 p.m.
