Kerry is the host of The MarketingProfs podcast, a show which interviews thought leaders in the marketing industry.

The show recently celebrated it 300th episode late last year.

What’s interesting about what Lou Imbriano had to say was it’s not just about X plus Y equals Z.

You can’t just do the same thing no matter what type of business you are.

Every customer segment is a little bit different.

Every business is a little bit different.

You can not give a formula about how to build a relationship.

You have to just be prepared to go the extra mile for your customers and know what it is you know or anticipate.

What it is that certain segments need and really genuinely express I think empathy and interest in helping them get the most out of your product or service.

It is a lot more human and it’s much more of an art than a science sometimes.

Sure there’s data behind how often those people renew because you put in the extra effort.

But can you draw a straight line between opening after hours so that somebody can get their work done because they are on a deadline and extra revenue through renewal?

That would be difficult, but the relationship is there nonetheless.

That’s what was interesting about Lou.

He works a lot now.

He was with the (New England) Patriots before.

So it’s very different kind of marketing.

But you still had your super fans and then you’re more casual fans and then people who maybe come to a game now and then and people who just don’t care about sports at all.

So who are you going to focus on?

Obviously, the people who cares and spend money with you.

LIVE STREAMING

Depends on your business.

It can always help you.

If you are talking about driving real specific business objectives, I think if you do events, even a user conference, then live streaming would be very beneficial to you because you are going to create kind of a fear of missing out among the people who did not attend the event and they’re going want to come next time.

So there’s a lot to be said for featuring users, customers, clients, employees, etc.

Live streaming gives you a look at someone literally that you could not get any other way from a glossy headshot and a well-written piece or even an audio podcast to a point.

I think that’s always gonna benefit you.

If you are selling Lamborghinis, then live stream, not while driving because it would be irresponsible.

I think it’s very valuable.

So the more you can do something different, the better your results are going to be for gaining some initial exposure.

Live streaming that way can be good too.

PODCASTING

You have seen an incredible renaissance in podcasting because it is so much easier for people to produce them and publish them.

It’s so much easier for people to find and listen to them.

Edison Research does this great series year after year called “The Infinite Dial

It talks about the podcast listening audience.

It’s growing and is really valuable.

The people that listen to a podcast on average make more money.

They are more inclined to interact with brands online.

So if you are in marketing, you should be podcasting because the people who listen to podcasts, they are the people you want.

It’s better than a lot of other marketing channels we invest a lot in and do not think twice about.

From a qualitative perspective, it literally gives you your customers ear.

There is an intimacy to that.

I’ve had people recognize me at marketing profs events just from my voice which is hysterical to me.

There’s something very personal about it as well.

I just think it’s a medium unlike any other.

Not only is the research there to support that it’s growing, but anecdotally, people seem to gravitate towards it.

CHOOSING BETWEEN LIVE STREAMING AND PODCASTING

You can consider a live stream a podcast if you do it regularly.

It’s not audio only.

I mean you could have a video podcast.

For one thing, you must have effective live stream if you are video podcasting because it’s really hard to edit video.

So if you stutter or something and try to fix that, you will be like a jump out in the video.

If you’re a little skittish of post-production, then live streaming might be preferable for you.

If on the other hand, you’re afraid of saying something wrong, then maybe start out with an audio podcast because you can fix that.

So it’s really a question of your goals and your preferences.

There are times that watching a video is not convenient.

Going to the gym comes to mind.

You should not be watching a video while sitting in the car.

It’s just different.

You are reaching people at a different time.

The only thing is a lot of people watch videos with the volume off because they don’t want to get caught at work.

Unless they have close captioning or something, they’re not going to know what you are saying.

Does Not Hurt To Be Wrong

I don’t have any posts this week about social media or live streaming.

However, I will chat about something else many people are afraid of.

Being wrong.

What I mean is many of us always want to be right.

We see a lot of predictions of where social media is going in the next couple of years.

Or which social media platform will be around.

Some thought that Vine would be around for a while because they were one of the first to jump start the live streaming revolution.

We even thought that Facebook was going to be a second class social media platform because they implemented their program to where you pay in order to boost your post.

Look at facebook now as they are continuing to dominate the social media scene especially with live video.

This leads to what I am chatting about in being wrong with predictions.

I made predictions over the years that turned out to be wrong.

People made fun of me for my wrong predictions that they called it the “Chevy Curse”

I keep on making some predictions surrounding a sporting event because sometimes they come to pass.

In this case, I have made a bet on myself on being a full time entrepreneur.

I am believing that things will be well with the business because I have learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way.

I understand that there is no such thing as over night success in building a business.

Yet many want to believe that when they start a business they will become profitable or even rich quickly.

The above will happen only if they experienced failure in their first business and learned valuable lessons.

Some might call us insane because we have not seen money rolling in despite years of hard work.

They will tell us to get a real work at a company.

They are the same ones who are miserable working at a 9-5 corporation.

I will tell that I am not afraid to be wrong in believing that my business will succeed because I know I am trying something new in being an entrepreneur.

I faced a situation when I started college late and wondered if I will ever graduate.

I worked hard in order to attain my college degrees from Lone Star College and Sam Houston State University.

That same tenacity will propel me towards achieving profitability this year which will take my business to the next level.

Even if people tell me I am crazy, I will continue to air my podcast every Tuesday, publish my blog on Wednesdays and participate in Twitter chats despite not seeing the positive results yet.

I rather be insane in doing the above than waste time in work that does not fulfill my destiny as a business owner.

Always Reinvent Yourself To Maintain Success

The most popular advice when starting out as an entrepreneur or podcaster, etc. is to pick a niche.

That is great advice to a huge degree because you do not want to spread yourself out too thin.

The thing about it is that sometimes that advice could get outdated in the long run.

Many college students have been specializing in a major which they believe will allow them to get a quicker path to getting the job of their dreams.

At first, it works out to a degree because they land a great job with an awesome starting salary.

When that skill is shipped off overseas, they are in trouble because they only are good in that particular skill.

One of the things a person can do when they are about to get laid off because of their department getting shut down is to reinvent themselves and learn new skills.

The reason being is that they will avoid being caught off guard when that layoff occurs.

They will be in a fantastic position to be at the right place at the right time when the company posts a job opportunity that they are qualified for.

Like Carlos Gil and Hank Blank.

Mr. Gil was working as a banker before he unexpectedly got laid off from his job.

He took great advice from his mother and set up an account on LinkedIn and connected with important people which allowed him to become a thought leader, speaker, and also landing a job in St. Louis.

Unfortunately, he got laid off again earlier this year in St. Louis.

Though he was surprised, he did not panic because he already had a strong social media presence and had established himself as a thought leader which led him to his current job as a Senior Social Marketing Manager at the very place which help him to reinvent his skills, LinkedIn.

As for Mr. Blank, he also is a strong advocate for reinventing your skills because he has been reinventing himself for over a decade as a self-employed consultant.

Before that he was working in advertising for about 25 years before he was unexpectedly fired from the agency where he was partner in 2001 over the phone.

Undaunted, Mr. Blank created his own business cards and launched his consulting practice.

He has leveraged LinkedIn and has built a solid reputation as a consultant.

Even though it is important to have a niche, it is always important to go outside of that niche and learn a new skill because when times get tough and you are looking for something new, you will be ready for the “hard times.”

Now, I want to share about another person who has reinvented their skills: myself .

I consider myself a sports writer because I have spent over two years freelancing for a daily newspaper in Huntsville, Texas.

Thought it was great and I loved the fact that I could cover sporting events and share stories of athletes who have succeeded, I was “trapped” because the sporting events happened during the fall and spring seasons.

So in the summer times, I was out of work.

I was over-specialized in one skill, which was covering sports and I could not continue to freelance for the paper during the summer times.

That was when I learned the importance of being knowledgable in other subjects in addition to sports.

That way, I would be able to better my chances at gaining other gigs which could supplement the “dry” months while waiting for sporting events to happen.

Now, I can say that I am learning other subjects like social media and I am a contributing blogger to Millennial CEO, which deals with social media, business and leadership.

It is also safe to say that I had reinvent myself because I am about to be a guest on a Twitter chat called “Content Chat” tomorrow at 3 p.m. eastern, 2 p.m. central to chat about podcasting.

So you see why it is important not to overspecialize in one skill.

Though it is important to have a strong expertise in one skill, it is always important to reinvent yourself and learn new skills everyday even if it is outside your comfort zone.

When you reinvent yourself, you will be in a much better position when the company decides to cut your department.
